What is Monk Fruit?

Monk fruit, also known as Luo Han Guo, has been consumed throughout the world for generations.  First brought into the US in the early 1900′s and used as a traditional cough remedy, it has also been used as a 100% fruit sweetener in juices and other fruit based sweets such as pies, custards and fillings.

Monk fruit is a member of the melon family and is grown on elevated vines similar to grapes and on steep mountainsides.  The juice when squeezed is approximately 60X sweeter than sucrose.  Due to its intense sweetness, Monk Fruit, when used at sucrose-equivalent levels,  shows no glycemic response in the lab and is safe for diabetic use.  Over the last several years, we have seen low and zero calorie beverages, chocolates, ice cream and cookies be made to suit a variety of lifestyle and dietary needs.
